About Mailman Listervs

Some campus mailing lists are hosted on our Mailman listserv instead of a Microsoft Distribution List.

Features include:

  • Members managed by IIT or Mailman List owners
  • Members may be internal or external
  • The default email address syntax is: listname@lists.hvcc.edu
  • A subject prefix may be added to all list messages (Example: [Employees] Campus Chronicle)
  • Option to moderate messages to the list
  • Option to archive messages to the list
  • Self-subscription options

Prerequisites before continuing this article:

  • The Mailman list will need to be created by IIT. If you need a list created, please submit a Service Request.
  • You will need to be an administrator or moderator of the list with appropriate permissions to the server.
  • You will need the local password to the list. If you are an administrator or moderator and do not have this, please submit a Service Request.

Managing a Listserv

IIT will provide your list email address, links, and local password via secure email.

Viewing Members

  1. Navigate to your list Admin Panel.
  2. Select Membership Management from the top link menu.

Adding Members

  1. Navigate to your list Admin Panel.
  2. Select Membership Management then Mass Subscription from the top link menu.
  3. Enter the list of email addresses you would like to add in the first text box.
  4. Select Submit Your Changes at the bottom of the page.

Users may also request to subscribe themselves by sending a blank email to LISTNAME-join@lists.hvcc.edu. This will go into the moderation queue and require an administrator or moderator to approve or deny it.
