Why am I being asked for a Duo Bypass Code?

If you are being asked for a Bypass Code from your IT department for Duo, it is typically because you do not have a usable authentication method to sign in on the device/phone/computer you're using.

This typically happens if you ONLY set up TouchID/FaceID (or similar) when you initially set up Duo.

You do not need a bypass code. You can choose to do one of the following:

  1. Add an additional authentication method to your Duo account. Follow the instructions below.
  2. Only if you do not have access to the original device you used to set up Duo with TouchID/FaceID/etc, you can call the CLC Help Desk at 518-629-7364 and they can reset your DUO after verifying your ID over a Zoom call. ID verification is required for security purposes.

Add an authentication method (phone) to your Duo account

In order to add an authentication method to Duo yourself, you need use the device you initially registered for Duo on. This is because that device is the only device that has the TouchID/FaceID/etc that you initially used to set up Duo.

  1. On the device you initially used to set up Duo, open a private/incognito browser window in your browser of choice (Chrome, Firefox, etc) (typically via the hamburger menu)
  2. Go to hvcc.edu > I am a... > Student, and click on Webmail (or another link that uses your HVCC Microsoft account to sign in).
  3. Sign in with your hvcc.edu email address and password.

    •
  4. When the DUO prompt shows up, do not authenticate, instead, click "Other options".

    •
  5. On the "Other options to log in" page, click "Manage devices".

    •
  6. DUO will ask to verify your identity with your existing authentication method in order to manage devices. Click Touch ID, or whatever method you have available.

    •
  7. Verify your identity.

    •
  8. On the manage devices page, click "Add a device".

    •
  9. It is HIGHLY recommended to select Duo Mobile. You may also choose Phone number if you do not have a smartphone.

    •
  10. Follow the prompts to continue setting up your additional authentication method of choice.

  11. Once complete, you should be able to sign into your HVCC account on any device using your newly added phone.

If you were not able to complete the above steps, please call the CLC Help Desk at 518-629-7364 and be prepared to join a Zoom call to verify your ID.
