This article will outline all the steps required to install and use the UDS (VDI) Client on macOS. This is only required if the built-in HTML5 UDS viewer within your web browser is insufficient.
Prerequisite: Before installing the UDS Client, please install Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Mac App Store. Once installed, open Microsoft Remote Desktop, and run through the Microsoft prompts to allow camera and microphone use. Then, continue with the steps below.
If you try to connect to a UDS session without Microsoft Remote Desktop installed, you will get the following error message:
Installing and Using the UDS Client
- Once Microsoft Remote Desktop is installed (see above), go to https://vdi.hvcc.edu.
- Select UDS Client at the top of the page, and choose the MacOS (pkg) option to download the UDS client installer.
- Once downloaded, in Finder go to your ~/Downloads folder, right-click the UDSClient-x.x.x.pkg file, and select Open. If you do not right-click and choose Open, it may show an error that the installer is from an unidentified developer and cannot be run.
- When prompted with the "MacOS cannot verify the developer" screen, select Open.
- The installer will launch. If you are on an Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, etc) Mac, you may be prompted to install Rosetta. Select Install, and enter your administrator password if prompted. If you are not prompted to install Rosetta, skip to step 6.
- Continue through the steps of the installer, entering your administrator password if necessary.
- Once complete, close the installer, and return back to UDS in your web browser. If you are still on the UDS Client Install page, select the UDS HVCC icon in the top left.
- Choose a pool that uses the "RDP" option by clicking the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) on said pool and choosing Connections > RDP. There are some pools where this is the default option when clicking on just the pool itself.
- When prompted, select Allow to open UDS Client through the website.
- The UDS Client will now run. When prompted, approve the server connection by selecting Yes.
- The following message will show while connecting to the UDS RDP Session (do not cancel):
- Once the service is created, Microsoft Remote Desktop will open, and prompt for your password again. Enter your password, select Continue, then select Continue again on the following certificate prompt.
- Once this is complete, you are now connected to the UDS RDP Session, and you will see a DUO Prompt. Choose a method to authenticate with DUO, and continue.
- Once DUO MFA is complete, you will see a Windows login screen signing you in, followed by your Windows desktop. You are now signed into the virtual (or physical) Windows machine. The window will open in full screen mode and occupy all of your monitors if you have multiple monitors. To exit full screen, you may move your cursor to the very top of the screen, and select the green button in the top left.
- When you are ready to log out of the session, double-click the red LOGOFF button on the desktop.
