Installing the UDS Client - for NON-HVCC Macs

Summary

Instructions on installing and using the UDS Client on non-HVCC Macs.

Body

This article will outline all the steps required to install and use the UDS (VDI) Client on macOS. This is only required if the built-in HTML5 UDS viewer within your web browser is insufficient.

1. Installing Windows App

Before installing the UDS Client, please install Windows App from the Mac App Store. Once installed, open Windows App (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop), and run through the Microsoft prompts to allow camera and microphone use. Then, continue with the steps below.

If you try to connect to a UDS session without Windows App installed, you will get the following error message:

Microsoft Remote Desktop error message

2. Installing and Using the UDS Client

  1. Once Windows App is installed (see above), go to https://vdi.hvcc.edu. Sign in with your HVCC email address and password.
  2. Select UDS Client at the top of the page, and choose the MacOS (pkg) option to download the UDS client installer.
  3. Once the download is complete, try to open the downloaded file UDSClient-x.x.x.pkg.
    • If you receive the following error message, click Done.
    • Then, open System Settings ( Apple Menu > System Settings...), scroll down, and click Privacy and Security. At the bottom of the Privacy and Security page, click Open Anyway.
  4. When prompted with the following dialog, select Open Anyway. If prompted, enter an administrator username and password.
  5. The installer will launch. If you are on an Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, etc) Mac, you may be prompted to install Rosetta. Select Install, and enter your administrator password if prompted. If you are not prompted to install Rosetta, skip to step 6.
    • Prompt to install Rosetta
  6. Continue through the steps of the installer, entering your administrator password if necessary.
  7. Once complete, close the installer, and return back to UDS in your web browser. If you are still on the UDS Client Install page, select the UDS HVCC icon in the top left.
    •
  8. Choose a pool that uses the "RDP" option by clicking the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) on said pool and choosing Connections > RDP.
    • Note: If you have multiple monitors and want your UDS session to show full screen on all of your monitors, select RDP Multi-Monitor. Otherwise, choose RDP Single Monitor.
    • Note: There are some pools (i.e. CAD) where RDP is the default/only option when selecting just the pool itself.
  9. If prompted, select Allow to open the UDS Client through the website.
  10. The UDS Client will now run. When prompted, approve the server connection by selecting Yes. This will only appear the first time you connect.
    • Approve UDS server screen
  11. The following message will show while connecting to the UDS RDP Session (do not cancel):
    • Service being created screen
  12. Once the service is created, Windows App will open, and prompt for your password again. Enter your password, select Continue, then select Continue again on the following certificate prompt.
    • Enter your user account screen
    • Accept security certificate screen
  13. Once this is complete, you are now connected to the UDS RDP Session, and you will see a Windows login screen signing you in, followed by your Windows desktop. You are now signed into the virtual (or physical) Windows machine. The window will open in full screen mode and occupy all of your monitors if you selected RDP Multi-Monitor. To exit full screen, you may move your mouse to the very top of the screen, and click the green button in the top left.
  14. When you are ready to log out of the session, double-click the red LOGOFF button on the desktop.
