Wireless Setup for Ubuntu

Note: These instructions are valid for versions 10.04 through 14.04, inclusive. (See the note at the end for 14.04 users that are having trouble connecting.)

If you are a current Hudson Valley Community College student or employee you may connect these devices to our wireless network by following the instructions below.

Step 1

Locate the wireless logo on the top status bar. This will appear as an empty wedge. Select or right-click the wireless logo and select HVCC-COMM. If you cannot find this, you may need to consult with your manufacturer documentation on how to enable the wireless transceiver.

Step 2

Fill out the form for the wireless configuration.

  • Wireless security must be WPA2 Enterprise
  • Authentication must be Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • Anonymous identity and CA Certification can remain blank
  • PEAP version must be Automatic
  • Inner Authentication must be MSCHAPv2

Be sure to fill in the Username and Password values, then select Connect.

Step 3

You can ignore the notice regarding the Certificate Authority.

  • Check Don’t warn me again

Select Ignore to finish the connection.

Step 4

Confirm that the wireless network is connected. This will be evident by the notice of HVCC-COMM Connection Established.

NOTE: 14.04 users may experience a bug with WPA2-Enterprise and 802.1x. The workaround is shown below and can only be done after you have tried to connect and have been unsuccessful.

As the super user open the following file with vi, nano or gedit:

gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/HVCC-COMM

and change the line containing system-ca-certs to be the following:

system-ca-certs=false
