Time/Motivation Considerations
(As determined by DC)

Trainee can devote at least 2 hours per week to attend class between the hours of 8:30-5:00 for 7 weeks or be approved by DC and Director of Distance Learning for online, customized or modified training?
Trainee can devote additional time as needed in between class sessions to develop or input course material? (SUNY Online estimates ~100 hours to develop a full semester course)
If there is a reason for DC to not want to schedule this instructor in the classroom due to extenuating circumstances-will those circumstances affect online teaching as well?

Options for Customized or Modified Training

(As determined by DC and Director of Distance Learning)

  Has previous experience teaching online?
Has taken comparable pedagogical training somewhere else?
Has taught online using a course management system? (Brightspace, Blackboard, or Canvas)
Has used Brightspace extensively for web enhanced courses?
For Adjuncts Only
All new adjuncts - experienced or not- will still need to know about HVCC systems, policies and procedures
(As determined by DC)

WIReD

Webmail

Grading deadlines

Departmental policies

College’s Technology Tools and resources

Etc.

DC must arrange for computer accounts to be created if new trainee needs training and is not currently on the master schedule
(As determined by DC)
What accounts are needed?

Training Options: (As determined by Director of Distance Learning in collaboration with DC)

Scenario 1: Adjuncts developing new course

  1. Adjuncts that have never taught online would be required to attend the full 7-week Online Instructor Training prior to the semester a course is to be taught. The training is offered via in-person or remote modalities and available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Training time will be 2 hours per week as arranged during the time frame Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Other options can be made “by arrangement.”
  2. Adjuncts who have already taught online before are eligible for customized and fast track training. This would require the adjunct to consult with both the Director of Distance and Online Learning and the Department Chair to determine how much and what type of training will be needed.

Scenario 2: Adjuncts hired to teach already developed courses

  1. Adjuncts that have never taught online and are hired to teach an already developed course would be required to attend the 7-week Online Instructor Training prior to the semester a course is to be taught. The training is offered via in-person or remote modalities and available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Training time will be 2 hours per week as arranged during the time frame Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Other options can be made “by arrangement.”
  2. Adjuncts who have already taught online and have used Brightspace are eligible for customized and fast track training. This would require the adjunct to consult with both the Director of Distance Learning and the Department Chair to determine how much and what type of training will be needed.
  3. Adjuncts who have already taught online before but not used Brightspace (example, taught on Blackboard, or Canvas) are eligible for customized and fast track training:
This would require the adjunct to consult with both the Director of Distance Learning and the Department Chair to determine how much and what type of training will be needed. This can be accommodated by customized training.
