VPN Connection Setup for Windows 10

This will install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to the college campus which will allow to you access protected resources, such as network shares.

Add a VPN Connection

  1. Select the Windows Start Icon 
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Network & Internet
  4. Select VPN 
  5. Select Add a VPN Connection
  6. Enter the following information in the Add a VPN Connection form
    • VPN provider: Windows (built-in)
    • Connection name: HVCC VPN
    • Server name or address: softvpn.hvcc.edu
    • VPN type: L2TP/IPsec with pre-shared key
    • Pre-share key: vpn
    • Type of sign-in info: User name and password
    • User name (optional): Leave blank
    • Password (optional): Leave blank
  7. Uncheck the Remember my sign-in info box.
  8. Select Save Add a VPN Connection Form

Enable Split-Tunneling

Split-Tunneling allows your internet traffic to be split between your home internet connection and the HVCC VPN, which prevents unnecessary stress on the HVCC network. If you visit an HVCC resource (network shares, internal college systems, etc.) the traffic will go over the HVCC VPN. If you visit a non-HVCC resource (external websites such as Google) the traffic will go over your home internet connection. 

  1. Select the Windows Start Icon 
  2. Type ncpa.cpl in the search box and press Enter on your keyboard.
  3. Right-click on HVCC-VPN and select Properties from the menu.
  4. Select the Networking tab.
  5. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the list.
  6. Select the Properties button on the lower right.

  7.  Select the Advanced button.

  8. Uncheck the box for Use the default gateway on the remote network.
  9. Select OK on the three open windows to save and close the settings.

Connect to the HVCC VPN

  1. In your taskbar on the lower right, select the Network icon.

  2. Select HVCC VPN.
  3. Select Connect.
  4. Enter your college username and password.
  5. Select OK. You are now connected to the HVCC VPN.
  6. To disconnect, follow steps 1 and 2 then select Disconnect.
